US Secretary of State Rubio states there is a strategic impasse in the war against Ukraine
US Secretary of State Mark Rubio stated that he does not currently see prospects for resolving the war between Russia and Ukraine through negotiations, and described the situation as a strategic dead end. He identified the demand from Moscow for full control over the Donetsk region as the main obstacle, which Ukraine considers unacceptable; Rubio also warned about the risk of the war expanding beyond Ukraine.
US Secretary of State Mark Rubio stated in an interview with the Greek publication Kathimerini that he does not currently see prospects for resolving the Russia-Ukraine war through diplomatic negotiations. According to him, the situation is in a strategic dead end, which could end either through negotiations or further escalation.
The main obstacle to a resolution, Rubio stated, is Russia's position: Moscow demands full control over the Donetsk region, while Ukraine considers this condition unacceptable. The Secretary of State emphasized that the US is ready to continue playing a constructive role if there is an opportunity for a diplomatic solution, as such a result would be in the interests of both Ukraine and Russia.
Rubio separately expressed concern about the risk of the war expanding beyond Ukraine, citing recent drone attacks on ships in the Black Sea and the possibility of sabotage operations in neighboring countries. According to the US, Russia may attempt to use the approach of winter to strike at Ukraine's energy infrastructure in order to increase pressure. He also noted that Ukraine has strengthened its capabilities for striking targets deep within Russian territory.
