US Congress: Republican Fitzpatrick announces a bill to block the lifting of sanctions on Russian oil

Republican Brian Fitzpatrick, co-chair of the Friends of Ukraine Caucus in the U.S. Congress, has announced a bill called "Peace Through Strength," which aims to prevent President Donald Trump from unilaterally lifting sanctions on Russian oil. The bill is intended to be brought to a vote without the Speaker's consent by gathering 218 votes through a discharge petition. Republican Don Bacon is expected to be a co-sponsor.

Republican Brian Fitzpatrick, co-chair of the "Friends of Ukraine Caucus" in the US Congress, announced on social media platform X that he intends to introduce a bill that would prevent President Donald Trump from unilaterally lifting sanctions on Russian oil. The document is titled "The Ronald Reagan 'Peace Through Strength' Act, prohibiting the lifting of sanctions on Russian oil."

To promote the Fitzpatrick plan, the representative intends to use the "discharge petition" mechanism – a petition to bring the issue to a vote. This procedure allows the initiation of consideration of the bill in the House of Representatives without the approval of the Speaker and the relevant committee, provided that 218 votes are collected. Republican Congressman Don Bacon stated that he has already agreed to become one of the first co-authors of the document. Fitzpatrick also expressed support for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian people.

The initiative emerged against the backdrop of a dispute between Kyiv and Washington over Ukraine's strikes on Russian energy infrastructure and agreements between the United States and Russia on the supply of diesel fuel. October 10 Donald Trump stated that Ukraine needs a new president who can negotiate an agreement with Russia, and he claimed that Volodymyr Zelenskyy had repeatedly had the opportunity to stop the war, but did not take advantage of it. These statements were supported by American billionaire Elon Musk.
