Germany confirms support for Zelensky after Trump's call to replace the Ukrainian president

German Foreign Minister Johann Wędeful confirmed Berlin's support for Volodymyr Zelenskyy following President Donald Trump's call for his replacement. Wędeful called for increased pressure on Putin to encourage him to negotiate. Germany also stated that it would maintain sanctions against Russia.

German Foreign Minister, Johann Wędefu, confirmed that Berlin supports President Volodymyr Zelenskyy after President of the United States, Donald Trump, called for his replacement. This was reported by the Reuters agency. According to Wędefu, Germany remains on the side of Ukraine and its government and fully supports the President in fulfilling his difficult duties.

The statement was made during a meeting of the leadership of the Christian Democratic Party, led by Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The minister emphasized that the pressure on Vladimir Putin should not be reduced, but intensified, in order to persuade him to negotiate; for this, he said, consistency and clarity are necessary. According to Reuters, this indicates an increase in disagreements between Berlin and Washington.

Germany is the largest European donor to Ukraine. On Saturday, it announced that it would maintain sanctions against Russia — despite the temporary lifting of US restrictions on Russian fuel. Last month, Habeck met with the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Sergei Lavrov, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.
