NSZU: Blood components and transfusions for patients should be free of charge.

The State Health Service reminded hospitals that they must provide patients with blood components and perform transfusions free of charge, when medically indicated. This includes surgeries, childbirth, treatment of strokes and heart attacks, oncology, blood disorders, transplants, and complex neonatal cases. If hospitals demand payment or independently seek donors, the State Health Service advises reporting the incident to the number 16-77.

The National Health Service of Ukraine reminded hospitals that they are required to provide patients with blood components free of charge and perform transfusions when medically indicated.

The service is available during surgical procedures, childbirth, treatment of strokes and heart attacks, oncological diseases, blood disorders, transplants, and in complex neonatal cases. The need for the procedure is determined by a doctor, whether it is for emergency or planned care.

In the National Health Service program for the 2026 year, these requirements are enshrined in 13 packages of services. Medical institutions do not have the right to demand money from patients or their relatives, or to require them to find donors independently.

Regarding instances of demanding payment for blood components or blood transfusions, the National Health Service of Ukraine (NHSU) advises reporting such cases to the contact center at the number 16-77 or through the online complaint form.
