Trump paused the implementation of the law on sanctions against Russia and Iran
President of the United States, Donald Trump, has temporarily suspended the implementation of key provisions of the sanctions law against Russia and Iran, citing national interests. The law included, among other things, 500% tariffs on Russian goods and additional tariffs for major purchasers of Russian energy.
President of the United States, Donald Trump, signed an executive order that suspended certain provisions of the Lindsey Graham sanctions law against Russia and Iran. This decision was made on October 16, two days before the planned implementation of certain tariff measures.
According to a White House document released on its website, the decree aimed to expand sanctions pressure on Russia and countries that continue to purchase Russian energy resources or help circumvent restrictions. Specifically, it mentioned 500% tariffs on Russian goods and additional fees for the largest buyers of Russian energy resources.
In his decree, the President of the United States cited a provision of the law that allows for the waiver of sanctions, restrictions, and tariffs provided for therein, upon submission of a corresponding justification to Congress. Trump stated that granting such a waiver is in the national interest of the United States.
The special envoy of the President of the Russian Federation, Kirill Dmitriev, welcomed the decision of the US President, calling it "historic" and emphasizing the "serious damage" this law will inflict on the US economy. He also noted that "Washington and Moscow need dialogue, mutually beneficial cooperation, and shared responsibility for global stability."
At the same time, the decree does not revoke the sanctions and other restrictions previously imposed by separate executive orders of the United States against Russia. A group of 22 congressmen are demanding that the president explain why he has eased the sanctions pressure on Russia.
