Ukraine takes a step towards its own Starlink: the first communication satellite has been launched into orbit.

The Ukrainian company HIMERA and the Danish company GomSpace launched a test satellite, OBRIA NANO, into orbit as part of the SpaceX Transporter-18 mission. The satellite is intended to help create an independent Ukrainian communication network for the country's strategic needs.

The Ukrainian technology company HIMERA, in collaboration with the Danish GomSpace, launched OBRIA NANO into orbit – a test satellite that is intended to be the first element of a future independent Ukrainian communication network. The launch took place on October 1, 2026, as part of the SpaceX Transporter-18 mission, as reported by the state information agency "Ukrinform" citing a press release from GomSpace. The satellite's operational start was announced on October 27.

Currently, OBRIA NANO is undergoing scheduled technical tests. The results obtained will help developers determine the optimal structure for a full satellite communication system. It is planned that the device will operate under the management of a Ukrainian operator and will be used to meet the country's strategic needs in the field of security.

The OBRIA project aims to create its own satellite infrastructure, which will allow Ukraine to diversify communication channels and reduce its dependence on external providers of such services. In the future, the developers plan to deploy a network of satellites capable of providing communication across the entire country and complementing the capabilities of European satellite systems.

The next stage of the project will involve establishing satellite and communication terminal production in Ukraine. This will contribute to the development of domestic technological capabilities and the gradual expansion of national production capacity. According to HIMERA co-founder and CEO, Misha Rudominsky, the long-term goal of the project is to create an independent communication network that will strengthen Ukraine's strategic security and reduce its dependence on external suppliers.
