The EU welcomes the energy truce, but does not see that Russia is adhering to it — Callas

High Representative of the EU, Kay Kalas, before a meeting of the Council of the European Union for foreign affairs in Luxembourg on October 12, stated that the European Union welcomes the energy truce, but has not seen evidence that Russia is adhering to it. She called for increased pressure on Moscow, protection of Ukrainian energy before winter, and warned against an agreement that would only cover oil refineries.

High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kajsa Olgren, stated that the European Union welcomes the agreement on an energy truce between Ukraine and Russia, but currently does not see Moscow adhering to it. She made this statement before the start of a meeting of the Council of the European Union for Foreign Affairs in Luxembourg on October 12, the main topic of which she identified as the war in Ukraine.

According to Callas, she would like to see an agreement that would not only entail a cessation of attacks on the energy infrastructure, but also a cessation of the killing of people. She emphasized the importance of protecting Ukraine's energy sector in the run-up to winter and warned against an agreement that would only concern oil refineries: according to her, Ukraine has only one such refinery, while Russia has many, so such an agreement would be beneficial to Russia.

Callas emphasized the need to maintain pressure on Russia through sanctions. According to her, the EU is continuing to work on restrictions against the Russian military-industrial complex and is responding to the sham elections that Russia is holding in the occupied territories of Ukraine; currently, this involves 1600 specific positions.

Earlier, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, during a conversation with the President of the European Commission, discussed attacks on energy infrastructure in Kyiv and in the Kharkiv region, as well as further support for Ukraine and negotiations on joining the EU.
